Wisconsin Hiring Chief Conservation Warden

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has initiated the hiring process for a new Chief Conservation Warden.  This position has responsibility for approximately 285 staff (credentialed and non-credentialed) administering all aspects of law enforcement services (hunting, angling, trapping, off-highway vehicle, boat, forest protection, environmental protection, state parks/forest, state-lands etc.).  In addition the LE program also manages recreational safety programs (hunter, boating, OHV), civil environmental enforcement and R3 (recruitment, retention and reactivation) of hunters, anglers and trappers.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to fill several Game Warden vacancies throughout the state. Responsibilities include law enforcement duties; wildlife management data collection; wildlife conflict resolution; depredation investigations; working with the public; and representing the agency in day to day contact with the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Participates in research projects and population surveys.

  • Assists in providing information on wildlife education, law enforcement and management.

  • Gathers and compiles data into statistical information to meet requirements of periodic or other reports.

  • Patrols assigned areas to check for violations of game and fish and watercraft laws.

  • Carries out a variety of tasks in the habitat development and propagation of wildlife.
     

QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
**Agency requires that candidates have a Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, ichthyology, or other closely related field. Other degrees may be accepted with relevant wildlife work experience.

Wyoming State Law requires competitive testing (exam) for wildlife law enforcement positions (game warden).  Qualifying to take the game warden examination is based on review of college transcripts and relevant work experience submitted with application.  Candidates must successfully pass the Wyoming Game Warden Examination in order to be considered for a subsequent interview.  Please refer to the link below for details:

The Chief Game Warden commands a staff of 57 including a force of 43 game wardens, the law enforcement dispatch center, radio communications, and boating education throughout the state. The position is responsible for strategic planning, policies, regulations, legislation, budgets, and training of sworn and non-sworn personnel. The Chief supervises, evaluates performance and ensures proper training of assigned personnel; directs internal investigations, special field operations and complex investigation of misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and felony case work. The position presents cases, data, and agency priorities at the Legislature, Commission, and Courts as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in wildlife management, biology, criminal justice or closely related field and five years of responsible professional experience in the enforcement of wildlife and boating safety laws and regulations. Experience must have included at least two years of supervisory experience developing proposals and recommendations, budget administration, supervision of staff and program planning.

  • OR, an equivalent combination of related education and experience; Advanced degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.

  • Incumbent is required to be Nevada POST Category 1 within six months of being hired.

    Location: This position is located in Northern Nevada at Headquarters in Reno, an area that offers an excellent quality of life and world-class recreation amenities. At an altitude of 4500 feet, there are four distinct seasons. Average temperatures range from winter lows in the 20s to summer highs in the 90s, characterized by low humidity.
